About Aga Khan Palace
The Aga Khan Palace on the Nagar Road was built in 1892 by Sultan Muhammed Shah Aga Khan III, partly as famine relief work for people in the surrounding villages. Its place in history comes from the Quit India Movement: Mahatma Gandhi, Kasturba Gandhi and Gandhi's secretary Mahadev Desai were interned here from 9 August 1942 to 6 May 1944, and both Kasturba and Desai died in the palace during that time. Aga Khan IV donated it to the nation in 1969. Today it houses the Gandhi National Memorial, with museum galleries, a khadi shop and the samadhis of Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadev Desai in the garden, where prayers are held every morning. The Archaeological Survey of India declared it a monument of national importance in 2003.
