About Shaniwar Wada
Shaniwar Wada is the fortified palace of the Peshwas in the heart of old Pune. Baji Rao I laid its foundation on 10 January 1730 and it was completed in 1732; a fire that began on 27 February 1828 burned for seven days and destroyed the buildings inside. What survives is the granite rampart with nine bastions and five gates, including the spiked Delhi Darwaza, enclosing a garden laid out over the palace foundations. It is a ticketed monument under the Archaeological Survey of India. The forecourt and the gardens are the starting point for the old city's walks: the Pune Municipal Corporation's guided heritage walk assembles at the Delhi Darwaza at 6:30 am on Saturdays and Sundays, and the open ground outside hosts public events and festival gatherings.
