About Bal Gandharva Ranga Mandir
Bal Gandharva Ranga Mandir is Pune's best-known civic theatre, owned by the Pune Municipal Corporation and set beside Sambhaji Udyan on Jangli Maharaj Road. Its cornerstone was laid in 1962 and it opened on 26 June 1968, inaugurated by Yashwantrao Chavan at a ceremony chaired by Acharya Atre; the writer Pu La Deshpande helped conceive it. It is named after Bal Gandharva, the singer-actor of the Marathi musical stage. The 989-seat auditorium runs Marathi plays, lavani, orchestra nights, stand-up comedy and award functions almost every day, and the exhibition hall upstairs hosts art and photography shows. In March 2026 the corporation announced fresh plans to renovate and modernise the building; an earlier redevelopment proposal had drawn objections from artists, so check that the theatre is operating before you book.
