Ganeshotsav in Pune: Manache Ganpati, Dagdusheth & the Visarjan Procession

Ganeshotsav is Pune's defining festival, and the next one runs from Ganesh Chaturthi on Saturday 4 September 2027 to Anant Chaturdashi on Tuesday 14 September 2027. The 2026 festival ended with the immersion procession on 25 September. The public festival took shape here in the 1890s, with Bhausaheb Rangari's mandal and Lokmanya Tilak's campaign to turn a household puja into a community event, and the old city still sets its pattern. Five mandals hold the honour of leading the immersion procession, the Manache Ganpati, in fixed order: Kasba Ganpati, the city's gram daivat, then Tambdi Jogeshwari, Guruji Talim, Tulshibaug and Kesariwada. The Shrimant Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati in Budhwar Peth draws the largest crowds, including a mass recital of the Atharvashirsha by tens of thousands of women. For ten days the peths fill with decorated pandals, dhol-tasha troupes and visitors walking from mandal to mandal late into the night, while the Pune Festival adds music, dance and sports programmes. The Anant Chaturdashi procession along Laxmi Road usually runs for more than a day. The metro has extended its hours during the festival in recent years, and it is the only sensible way in.

Good to know

  • Use the metro. Kasba Peth and Mahatma Phule Mandai stations put you in the middle of the mandals, and central roads are closed to vehicles in the evenings.
  • Go on a weekday or after 11 pm for shorter queues; the weekend and the last two nights are the most crowded.
  • Wear closed shoes and keep phones and wallets in front pockets. The lanes around Dagdusheth and Mandai are packed.
  • Dhol-tasha is loud at close range; carry earplugs, especially for children.
  • On immersion day, pick one viewing spot along Laxmi Road and stay there. Moving against the procession is nearly impossible.
  • Check the police traffic plan and the metro's festival timetable, both published a few days before the festival.
